## What This Service Covers

A heat pump health check is a comprehensive assessment of your system's actual performance compared to its designed capability. We measure real-world COP (Coefficient of Performance), verify system settings, check component condition, and provide a detailed written report with actionable recommendations.

This service is for homeowners who want to know whether their heat pump is performing as it should, those with higher-than-expected electricity bills, and anyone seeking an independent second opinion on a system installed by another company.

Unlike a standard service — which focuses on maintenance and component condition — a health check focuses on performance. Is your system achieving the COP it should? Are the settings optimised for your property? Is the immersion heater activating when it should not be?

Every health check concludes with a detailed report that includes measured data, identified issues, and prioritised recommendations. You receive clear, honest information to make informed decisions about your system.

## What Happens If You Wait?

Most heat pump owners have no idea what COP their system is actually achieving. The manufacturer's quoted COP of 4.0 or higher refers to ideal laboratory conditions. Real-world performance depends entirely on the installation quality and system configuration.

Without performance data, you cannot tell whether your electricity bills are normal for your property or inflated by a poorly configured system. Many homeowners accept high bills as the cost of having a heat pump, when the real issue is correctable.

Installer-provided performance reports — if provided at all — are often based on controller readings rather than independently measured data. These can be misleading and do not identify system-level issues such as excessive immersion heater usage, hydraulic problems, or incorrect emitter sizing.

Waiting until a fault develops before assessing your system means you have already been overpaying for months or years. A proactive health check identifies inefficiencies while they are still costing you money, not after they cause a breakdown.

## How We Work

1

### System Documentation Review

We review your installation documentation, commissioning records (if available), and any performance concerns you have.

2

### Physical Inspection

Full visual and physical inspection of the outdoor unit, indoor components, pipework, insulation, emitters, and controls.

3

### Performance Measurement

We measure flow and return temperatures, compressor current draw, refrigerant pressures (where accessible), and calculate actual COP at current operating conditions.

4

### Settings Audit

We review weather compensation settings, DHW scheduling, flow rates, pump speeds, and any other controller parameters that affect performance.

5

### Report & Recommendations

You receive a comprehensive written report with measured data, identified issues, and prioritised recommendations ranked by cost and impact.

## Why It Matters

### Know Your Actual Performance

Measured COP data — not manufacturer claims — tells you exactly how efficiently your system is running.

### Independent Assessment

An objective review by someone who did not install your system. No bias, no defending previous work.

### Actionable Recommendations

Prioritised list of improvements ranked by cost and impact, so you can invest where it matters most.

### Reduced Energy Bills

Identifying and correcting inefficiencies typically reduces electricity consumption by 20–40%.

### Peace of Mind

Either your system is performing well — and you have the data to prove it — or you know exactly what needs fixing.

### Warranty & Compliance Support

Performance data and health check reports support warranty claims, MCS compliance, and grant scheme requirements.

## Technical Detail & Expertise

COP measurement requires simultaneous reading of the electrical input power and the thermal output. We measure compressor current draw and voltage to calculate electrical input. Thermal output is calculated from the flow rate (measured with an ultrasonic flow meter) multiplied by the temperature difference between flow and return, multiplied by the specific heat capacity of water.

This real-time COP measurement is compared against the manufacturer's published COP for the current operating conditions (ambient temperature and flow temperature). A significant gap indicates system-level issues that are reducing performance.

We check weather compensation curves against the property's actual emitter type and insulation level. Generic curves or disabled weather compensation are the most common causes of low COP in systems we assess.

DHW (domestic hot water) heating is analysed separately. We check the heat pump's contribution versus immersion heater usage, verify the legionella cycle frequency, and assess whether the cylinder coil is adequately sized for heat pump flow temperatures.

Emitter assessment involves calculating the required output for each room at the current flow temperature and comparing against the installed emitter size. Under-sized emitters force higher flow temperatures, directly reducing COP.

For properties with smart meters or energy monitoring systems, we can analyse historical consumption data to identify seasonal trends, unusual spikes, and patterns that indicate specific system issues.

Reports include photographs, measured data tables, and clear explanations in non-technical language. We rate each finding by severity and provide estimated cost and savings for each recommendation.
