    Detailed Case Studies

Ecodan Heat Pump Installation — Detached Home, Basingstoke

    The Challenge

A 4-bedroom detached property running an ageing oil boiler with annual fuel costs exceeding £3,200. The homeowners wanted a renewable heating solution but had been told by two other companies that their property wasn't suitable for a heat pump.

    Our Solution

We conducted a full heat loss survey and designed a Mitsubishi Ecodan 11.2kW system with appropriately sized buffer tank and optimised flow temperatures. Existing radiators were assessed — only two required upsizing. The installation was completed in three days with minimal disruption.

    The Result

Annual heating costs reduced to approximately £1,400. The system achieved a measured SCOP of 3.2 in its first winter. The homeowners reported consistently comfortable temperatures throughout the house for the first time in years.

Complex Fault Diagnosis — Daikin ASHP, Winchester

    The Challenge

A 2-year-old Daikin Altherma system experiencing intermittent shutdowns. The original installer had attended three times, replacing the PCB and an expansion valve, but the fault persisted. The homeowner was left without heating for extended periods during winter.

    Our Solution

Our diagnostic process identified a subtle refrigerant undercharge combined with an incorrectly positioned outdoor temperature sensor. The sensor was reading artificially high temperatures due to its proximity to an extract vent, causing the system to modulate incorrectly and trigger high-pressure faults.

    The Result

Refrigerant charge corrected to manufacturer specification and sensor relocated to a compliant position. The system has run continuously without a single fault code in the 14 months since our intervention.

Commercial Multi-Split AC — Office Building, Guildford

    The Challenge

A 6-unit office building with individual tenants requiring independent climate control. The existing system was a 15-year-old single-zone unit that couldn't meet varying demands across floors, leading to constant complaints and tenant dissatisfaction.

    Our Solution

Designed and installed a Mitsubishi Electric City Multi VRF system with individual zone controllers for each office. The installation was phased over two weekends to avoid business disruption. Each tenant now has independent temperature control via wall-mounted controllers.

    The Result

Tenant satisfaction improved significantly. Energy consumption reduced by approximately 35% compared to the previous system due to inverter-driven compressor technology and zone-specific control. No further complaints in the 18 months since installation.

Swimming Pool Heat Pump Recovery — Private Pool, Newbury

    The Challenge

A 12m outdoor swimming pool with a failing heat pump that couldn't maintain temperature above 22°C even in summer. The pool was effectively unusable from September to May. Previous attempts at repair by a general plumber had been unsuccessful.

    Our Solution

Diagnosed a significant refrigerant leak at the evaporator coil, compounded by a partially blocked plate heat exchanger caused by inadequate water treatment. We replaced the evaporator coil, recharged the system, and cleaned the heat exchanger. We also installed a water treatment system to prevent recurrence.

    The Result

Pool temperature now maintained at 28°C consistently. The swimming season extended from May through October. The homeowner estimated they recouped the repair cost within four months compared to the quote they'd received for a full replacement unit.

System Optimisation — Underperforming ASHP, Reading

    The Challenge

A Vaillant Arotherm heat pump installed 18 months earlier was producing heating bills nearly as high as the old gas boiler it replaced. The homeowner was frustrated and considering reverting to gas. The original installer insisted the system was working correctly.

    Our Solution

Our health check revealed flow temperatures set 12°C higher than necessary, weather compensation curve misconfigured, and the buffer tank bypass valve stuck open — meaning the system was cycling constantly. We recalibrated the entire system, adjusted flow temperatures, corrected the weather compensation settings, and freed the bypass valve.

    The Result

Monthly electricity consumption for heating dropped by 40% within the first billing cycle. The measured COP improved from 1.8 to 3.1. The homeowner now pays significantly less than they did with gas heating.

Emergency Compressor Failure — Care Home, Farnborough

    The Challenge

A residential care home's primary heating system — a Mitsubishi Ecodan cascade — suffered a compressor failure on a Friday evening in January. With vulnerable residents and sub-zero temperatures forecast, the situation was urgent.

    Our Solution

We responded within 45 minutes. On-site diagnosis confirmed a seized compressor on the lead unit. We isolated the failed unit and reconfigured the cascade to run on the backup compressor at increased capacity while sourcing an emergency replacement. The new compressor was installed within 36 hours.

    The Result

Internal temperatures never dropped below 19°C during the repair period. The care home manager reported that residents experienced no discomfort. The cascade system was fully restored to dual-compressor operation by Monday morning.
