    What This Service Covers

Air source heat pump installation is the design, supply, and fitting of a complete heating system that extracts renewable energy from the air to heat your home and provide hot water. When correctly installed, a heat pump delivers lower running costs than gas or oil, reduces your carbon footprint, and qualifies for government incentive schemes.

This service is for homeowners building new properties, replacing ageing boilers, or transitioning away from fossil fuel heating. It covers everything from initial survey and system design through to installation, commissioning, and handover.

The quality of installation determines whether a heat pump delivers on its promise. A heat pump paired with incorrectly sized radiators, poorly configured weather compensation, or inadequate pipework will underperform — regardless of the brand. We design the complete system, not just select a unit.

We install all major brands including Mitsubishi Ecodan, Daikin Altherma, Samsung EHS, Vaillant Arotherm, and Grant Aerona. Every installation is fully commissioned with documented settings, flow rates, and performance verification.

    What Happens If You Wait?

A heat pump installed without proper heat loss calculations and emitter sizing will run at high flow temperatures, reducing the COP and costing more to run than a well-configured system. Many homeowners experience this and conclude heat pumps do not work — when the problem is the installation quality.

Incorrect commissioning is the leading cause of heat pump underperformance in the UK. The BEIS Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project found that well-installed heat pumps consistently achieved COPs above 3.0, while poorly installed systems struggled to reach 2.0.

Choosing an installer based on price alone often results in cut corners — undersized pipework, missing buffer tanks, no weather compensation setup, and generic controller settings that waste energy. The initial saving is quickly eroded by higher running costs.

If your system is installed under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) without meeting MCS standards, you risk having to repay the grant. Proper design, installation, and commissioning documentation is essential.

    How We Work

    1

Home Survey & Heat Loss Calculation

We survey your property room by room, calculate heat loss per room, and determine the total heating demand to size the heat pump correctly.

    2

    System Design

We design the full system including emitter sizes (radiators or underfloor heating), hot water cylinder, buffer tank if needed, pipework layout, and control strategy.

    3

    Installation

Outdoor unit positioned for optimal airflow and minimal noise. Indoor components installed, pipework run and insulated, electrical supply connected.

    4

    Commissioning

Weather compensation configured for your specific property and emitters. Flow rates balanced, DHW schedule set, and system performance verified with documented readings.

    5

    Handover & Support

Full demonstration of controls, all documentation provided, and ongoing support including annual servicing.

    Why It Matters

    Lower Running Costs

A correctly installed heat pump with a COP of 3.5 delivers 3.5kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity — significantly cheaper than gas or oil when properly set up.

    Reduced Carbon Emissions

Heat pumps produce zero direct emissions and, as the electricity grid decarbonises, their total carbon footprint continues to decrease.

    Government Incentives

Air source heat pumps may qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, providing up to £7,500 towards installation costs.

    Year-Round Heating & Hot Water

Modern air source heat pumps operate efficiently down to -20°C ambient temperature, providing reliable heating and hot water all year.

    Property Value Increase

Properties with heat pumps benefit from higher EPC ratings, which increasingly affects property values and saleability.

    Properly Commissioned From Day One

Every system we install is commissioned with documented settings, verified flow rates, and measured performance — not just switched on and left.

    Technical Detail & Expertise

Heat loss calculations are performed room by room using U-values for walls, floors, ceilings, windows, and doors, combined with ventilation heat loss estimates. This determines the design heat load at the coldest expected outdoor temperature for your location. The heat pump is then sized to meet this load at a flow temperature that matches your emitter type.

Emitter sizing is critical. Radiators designed for a gas boiler running at 70°C flow temperature will not deliver adequate heat at the 35–45°C flow temperatures typical of an efficient heat pump installation. We calculate the required radiator output at low flow temperatures and recommend upgrades where needed.

We install monobloc systems (all refrigerant components in the outdoor unit, water connections into the property) and split systems (refrigerant connections between indoor and outdoor units). Monobloc systems are more common in domestic installations as they avoid the need for an F-Gas qualified installer to make refrigerant joints inside the property.

Hot water cylinder selection is important. Heat pump cylinders require larger coil surface areas than standard boiler cylinders to transfer heat efficiently at lower flow temperatures. We specify cylinders designed specifically for heat pump use.

Buffer tanks and low-loss headers are used where the system design requires them — for example, when the minimum flow rate of the heat pump exceeds the flow requirement of the smallest heating zone. We assess whether a buffer is needed based on the specific system design, rather than including one by default.

All installations include appropriate controls — typically a room thermostat, weather compensation sensor, and in many cases, zone control for different areas of the property. Smart thermostat integration is available where requested.

Electrical supply requirements vary by heat pump size. Domestic units typically require a 32A or 40A dedicated circuit. We coordinate with your electrician or provide the electrical connection as part of the installation.
